Falcontext vs ProWritingAidThe whole toolkit, or just what you need, privately?
ProWritingAid is a complete toolkit for storytellers: planning, writing sessions, grammar and style, AI story critique and publishing help. As a ProWritingAid alternative, Falcontext does less, on purpose: it tracks your writing, maps your book and checks your prose right next to the editor you use – instantly, with no AI, and your writing is never sent anywhere.

Falcontext vs ProWritingAid, side by side
| Falcontext | ProWritingAid | |
|---|---|---|
| What it’s for | Keeping count of your writing and checking your prose, privately, next to the editor you already use | A complete toolkit for storytellers: plan, write, edit and publish |
| Daily words, goals and streaks | Live next to your draft: today’s words, a daily goal, a streak and a finish date, sprints, and 59 badges to earn | Writing sessions with streaks and badges, sprints, nudges and resets |
| Prose checks | Checks with a traffic light each, written for fiction: tense and point-of-view slips (dialogue and italic thoughts left out), dialogue tags, telling emotions, crutch words, stage directions, monologues, chapter openings, pacing per chapter and more. You can mark every finding right in your text. Many free, the rest in Pro (on the free plan the Pro checks still show green, orange or red) | 25+ writing reports, such as overused words, sticky sentences, sentence length, sensory words, dialogue and pacing |
| Punctuation | Seven of the checks, written for fiction: dialogue punctuation (“Hello.” she said), Chicago-style commas and full stops inside quotes, punctuation consistency (quotation marks, dashes, ellipses and curly quotes used one way throughout), punctuation habits, spacing slips, unfinished sentences and doubled marks | Yes, in its grammar check |
| Spelling and grammar | The slips a spell checker misses: homophones and sound-alikes (their/there), name spelling slips (“Reina” and “Rena”), US and UK spellings mixed, words written two ways, and doubled words (“the the”). No full grammar check: your editor’s own does that part | Yes: a full grammar and spelling check |
| Your book’s structure | Chapters and scenes found for you, pacing and reading time per chapter, what each chapter is about, and a character tracker, worked out in your browser and included in the price | Story Critique with AI: chapter, plot, character and manuscript analysis, a virtual beta reader and a marketability analysis. Beyond the daily Chapter Critiques in its paid plans, these use Story Credits, bought separately |

In a proofreading test
I gave nine tools the same 40 sentences of fiction, with 28 mistakes: words that sound like the right one, and words typed twice (7 October 2026). ProWritingAid caught 24, with one false alarm (it wanted to remove a correct “that that”). Falcontext caught 23, with none, and with no AI at all. The full test, and how I ran it.
Where ProWritingAid is stronger
- Much more in one place: planning, writing sessions, grammar, story critique, publishing help, and a community with events.
- A full grammar and spelling check. Falcontext catches the slips a spell checker misses, and punctuation, but leaves grammar to your editor.
- AI feedback if you want it: Rephrase, and a Story Critique of your whole manuscript.
- It works inside a few apps Falcontext doesn’t support, such as Notion and Apple Notes.
Where this ProWritingAid alternative is different
- Your writing is never sent anywhere, and no AI is used on your writing in any way.
- Fast: Falcontext analyses a whole novel in seconds, with nothing to upload.
- Small and quiet: nothing to learn, no account, just a sidebar next to the editor you already use.
- Checks written for fiction: tense and point-of-view slips that leave dialogue and italic thoughts alone, dialogue punctuation, name spelling slips, telling emotions, pacing by your own chapters.
- Your whole manuscript, every time: no word limit and no daily runs to count, on the free plan too.
- A fraction of the price: Pro is $19.99 a year, where ProWritingAid’s Premium is $120.
Which one is for you: ProWritingAid, or an alternative?
If you want one place for everything, from planning to publishing, with a full grammar check and AI feedback, that’s what ProWritingAid is for.
If you want your writing to stay yours, with no AI anywhere near it, and a quiet companion that tracks your days, maps your book and checks your prose and punctuation in the editor you already love, for a fraction of the price, that’s Falcontext.
And they can work side by side: Falcontext in the sidebar for your daily count and private checks, ProWritingAid when you want a grammar check or AI feedback.
Questions writers ask.
Is Falcontext a ProWritingAid alternative?
For some writers. ProWritingAid is a complete toolkit: planning, writing sessions, grammar, AI story critique and publishing help. Falcontext is smaller on purpose: it tracks your writing, maps your book and checks your prose in the editor you already use, with no AI and nothing sent anywhere. Falcontext checks punctuation and the spelling slips a spell checker misses, but if a full grammar check or AI feedback matter to you, ProWritingAid has them and Falcontext doesn’t. If privacy, instant checks on your whole manuscript and a low price matter more, that’s what Falcontext is built for.
Does Falcontext use AI like ProWritingAid does?
No. No AI is used on your writing in any way: every Falcontext check is a rule or a word list that runs in your browser, and nothing rewrites your text. ProWritingAid says some of its features use AI, including large language models; Falcontext has no AI at all.
Can I use Falcontext and ProWritingAid together?
Yes. They don’t get in each other’s way: Falcontext in the sidebar for your daily count, streak and private checks, ProWritingAid when you want a grammar check or AI feedback.
