Falcontext › Word count tracker

Word count trackerYour words, counted while you write.

Falcontext is a word count tracker: it counts the words you add each day, against a daily goal and one for the whole book, and keeps your streak. It sits beside your editor, so there’s nothing to type in afterwards.

What the word count tracker tracks

The word count tracker in Falcontext’s Write tab: words today against the daily goal, the total and the streak.
  • Words today: what you added since the end of the last day, net. Cut a paragraph and it goes down.
  • A daily goal and a total goal for each document. With Pro, one pair for a whole book spread over several documents: a manuscript.
  • A finish date: at your pace over the last two weeks, the day you’ll reach your total.
  • Streaks: the days in a row you wrote. One missed day is forgiven, once per streak.
  • Personal records: your best writing day, your longest streak and your best sprint.
  • Sprints: a timer of 1 to 180 minutes that counts what you add. Copy a link and others sprint with you.
  • Writing days: a calendar of which scenes grew on which day.
  • Reminders: up to three a day, quiet once you’ve met your goal. In the browser extension and the desktop app.
  • The trend graph, in Pro: how your total grew over the last seven days.
  • A time goal, in Pro: your day counts at your words or your minutes, whichever comes first.

No logging by hand: Falcontext adds up your words as you go, on your own device. Like the rest of Falcontext, it works without AI.

How the word count tracker counts

Words today is your document’s count now, minus where it stood at the end of the last day Falcontext saw it. So it’s net: cut a paragraph and today’s number goes down with it. It never shows less than zero.

A day runs from midnight to midnight on your own clock. A document you started today counts from zero, even the words you typed before Falcontext first looked. Goals belong to the document you track, so your novel and your short story can each have their own. Your finish date comes from your average over the last two weeks, once there’s a week of tracking to go on. More on goals.

Only numbers are kept, on your own device: word counts, goals and streaks, never your writing. Your writing is never sent anywhere, and no AI is used on your writing in any way.

A word count tracker for every editor

Each editor has a page of its own: what’s counted there and what else you get.

Where it counts

In your browser, beside Google Docs, Atticus, WordPress and Ellipsus, with Reedsy Studio and Wattpad coming in the next update. Any other web editor that shows your writing as real text on the page is tracked too.

The desktop app for Mac and Windows counts beside Word, Scrivener, Pages, LibreOffice Writer, OpenOffice and Vellum. And Perch, the web app, has a writing pad of its own, for a phone or tablet. Each editor, and what it gets.

Write in more than one place? Turn on sync and your progress follows you through your own Google Drive. Words you wrote somewhere Falcontext isn’t still count, on the day it next sees the document.

Instead of a spreadsheet

No sheet to fill in at night, and no copying numbers from your editor: the count, the goal and the streak keep themselves. Used NaNoWriMo’s tracker? Set a total goal of 50,000 words and Falcontext shows the day you’ll reach it at your pace. Or join the November challenge.

And when the draft is done

The same panel checks your writing, from a character who stands up twice to a doubled word. How it analyses a whole book.

Questions about tracking your words

How does Falcontext count my daily words?

Words today is your document’s word count now, minus where it stood at the end of the last day Falcontext saw it. So it’s net: cut a paragraph and today’s number goes down with it. A day runs from midnight to midnight on your own clock.

What happens to my streak if I miss a day?

It survives one missed day, once per streak. A second missed day starts it again.
