• Only the story counted. The prologue, the chapters and the epilogue, inside parts and box-set volumes too. Not the title page, copyright, dedication, acknowledgements or About the author, nor parts Vellum leaves out of both the ebook and the print book.
• Counted every time Vellum saves. Today’s words against your goal, a streak that forgives one missed day, and a finish date at the pace you write. Vellum doesn’t even need to be open.
• Your chapters and scenes, mapped. Each chapter’s title is a chapter in Bird’s Eye, and Vellum’s ornamental breaks are scene breaks. An empty line, such as a gap around a flashback, stays a gap.
• Checks on the whole book. Filter words, tense slips, telling instead of showing, dialogue tags and the rest, on the latest text, after the book has left Word or Google Docs. Many of them free.
• Your cast, chapter by chapter. See where each character turns up, and who’s been off the page too long.
