Synonym CheckerThat word again? Find another one.
The Synonym Checker finds other words for the one you keep using. It looks them up in a thesaurus built into Falcontext, on your own device.
How the Synonym Checker works
Click Synonyms on the Write tab and type the word. It looks it up about a third of a second after you stop typing, or straight away when you press Enter.
You get up to 20 single words, the most common first. Click one to look that word up in turn, and follow the trail without retyping.
Typed “walked” or “houses”? It finds the base word (walk, house) and looks that up.
What it leaves out
Falcontext filters offensive words out of the results, with an open-source list (LDNOOBW).
Look up “black” or “white” and you get colours: ebony, jet and onyx, or ivory, snowy and pearly. For colour words, Falcontext keeps only the colour meanings, and leaves out the ones about people.
Private, like the rest
The word list ships inside Falcontext: a thesaurus built from WordNet, Princeton’s big map of English words. So a lookup goes nowhere. Not even the word.
It works offline too. The thesaurus is about 2 MB, and loads the first time you look a word up.
Free or Pro?
The free plan has one lookup a day, by your own clock. A lookup counts once it’s done, even if nothing came back. Pro has unlimited lookups.
Looking for the words you lean on in the first place? That’s a check: your crutch words.
